Can anybody be a suitable candidate for cosmetic tattooing?
The short answer is no. While it’s suitable for most people, there are certain factors that mean we can’t treat everyone. Before undergoing treatment, clients are always made aware that certain contraindications can prevent us from proceeding with a tattoo.
A contraindication is a specific condition or factor that may mean that a certain medical treatment or procedure could be dangerous to perform, because it could cause harm to the patient or lead to unfavourable results. In medical terms, it’s the opposite of an ‘indication’, which is a positive reason to go through with a certain treatment.
A consultation is recommended if you are unsure of your suitability.
Relative Contraindications
Conditions that may provide a temporary restriction on the procedure going ahead, or may require doctor's approval to ensure clients' safety.
Each of these contraindications may be manageable or safe under specific conditions, but obtaining clearance and practising caution ensures the best outcomes for both the practitioner and the client.
-
Those who have had recent Cosmetic Procedures: Chemical peels, microdermabrasion, or laser treatments on the face should be avoided 4-6 weeks before permanent makeup.
-
Those with recent sunburn or sun tanning: Skin needs time to heal and return to its natural state before tattooing.
-
Those with Infections or Illnesses: Colds, flu, or any infection should be resolved before proceeding, as the immune system is already compromised.
-
Those who are using Accutane or Retin-A/Retinol skin products or medication: These products make the skin extremely thin, sensitive and easy to damage. Please wait between 6 months to one year after finishing your course of medication/skincare before scheduling a cosmetic tattoo appointment. Please consult your doctor before you stop taking any prescription medications.
-
Those with Open Wounds, Acne, or Skin Conditions near the treatment area: Areas with acne, eczema, psoriasis, or dermatitis should be cleared up and healed before the procedure.
-
Those who are diabetic or dependent on insulin may require doctor's approval.
